Why Knowing How to Install a Spare Tire Matters

A flat tire can strike when you least expect it. Knowing how to install a spare tire gives you confidence and keeps you from being stranded. Whether you're driving a 2008 Acura TL or any other vehicle, having this essential skill is a must.

Tools You'll Need

  • Spare tire (check your trunk)
  • Jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Wheel wedges or bricks
  • Owner’s manual (vehicle-specific tips)

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Spare Tire

1. Pull Over Safely

Find a flat, level surface away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights and apply the parking brake.

2. Use Wheel Wedges

Place wheel wedges behind the tires opposite the flat to prevent the car from rolling.

3. Remove the Hubcap

Use a flathead screwdriver or the edge of the wrench to pop off the hubcap if your car has one.

4. Loosen Lug Nuts

Use the lug wrench to break the lug nuts loose, but don’t remove them completely yet.

5. Jack Up the Vehicle

Position the jack under the vehicle’s frame near the flat tire and raise it until the tire is off the ground.

6. Remove the Flat Tire

Fully remove the loosened lug nuts and pull the flat tire off.

7. Mount the Spare Tire

Line up the spare tire with the bolts and push it into place. Reinstall the lug nuts by hand.

8. Tighten Lug Nuts

Lower the car partially so the tire touches the ground, then use the wrench to tighten the nuts in a star pattern.

9. Lower the Vehicle Completely

Remove the jack and finish tightening the lug nuts securely.

10. Replace the Hubcap and Store Tools

Pop the hubcap back on if applicable, and make sure all tools and the damaged tire are stored properly.

Pro Tips

  • Only drive on a spare (especially a donut) for short distances and at moderate speeds.
  • Check the air pressure of your spare every few months.
  • Replace your flat with a full tire as soon as possible.
